Twitter inspires Samsung advert

Samsung’s latest TV advert, which pokes fun of the Apple iPhone 5, has been inspired by comments made about the phone from Twitter. Samsung have revealed that they had to go through thousands of tweets made by people complaining about the phone’s features; like the need to buy a new adaptor if you want to use older accessories. Samsung aren’t the only company inspired by the public’s tweets though. Procter and Gamble, makers of the Duracell Powermat, are to release an advert showing one man walking through the city with a green battery icon hovering above his smartphone. The idea came from making the observation that many people on Twitter often refer to the colour of their battery icon to show how much power they have left in their phone.

Smartphone sales surpass 1 billion

Research has shown that over one billion smartphones have been sold in the past 16 years. It is estimated that 1 in 7 people worldwide now own a smartphone, which is about 1.038 billion smartphones in use. That might seem like a lot of smartphones, but with markets in China and India just starting to get used to the idea of owning one, Strategy Analytics are predicting that it will take just three years for the next billion smartphones to be purchased. The first smartphone released was the Nokia Communicator. Nokia were the dominant force in sales of smartphones until 2007 when the iPhone was released, changing the way people use smartphones in their everyday lives, causing a surge in sales worldwide.

Facebook try out ‘Want’ buttons

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has announced that she would like to see the company move further into the mobile market. Speaking on a conference call on Monday, she said that she would like to reorganise the company to cater for users everyday habits, such as using email, search and mobile. “The mobile wave is a huge wave for us to ride,” she is reported that have said on the call. Mayer has only recently moved to Yahoo having made waves at Google, and her initial decisions decisions are going down well. “She handled the call very well,” said Gabelli & Co analyst Brett Harriss. “You have the tone of a professional CEO who just wants to block and tackle better and move the company forward,” he said, noting that he detected echoes of Google’s business approach in Mayer’s comments.

Zapp your way to election fever

With the American presidential election drawing closer, Zappar have released Zaphats, a set of election themed hats for use with the augmented reality app. The app allows the user to give themselves or a friend the face of either Barack Obama or Mitt Romney when they are wearing a hat. Kirk Ewing, creative director and founder of Zappar has said the new election themed Zaphats “should make debating with your friends and family more entertaining than the actual debates have been already.” Watch the video to see the app in action.

Apple release iBooks 3.0

Apple has released the new iBooks 3.0 update, which has given the app new features similar to those of the Amazon Kindle. The update brings a new bookshelf feature which allows users to view past purchases and download them again easily, as well as vertical scrolling, so pages can be viewed just as they would in a book. Books can now also be updated, so publishers can now add chapters and fix any typing errors they may have made without any extra cost to anybody who bought the book before the update. These changes could further change the way people read books and will certainly give Amazon competition in the e-books stakes.
